Eco Living: Eco-Friendly Resolutions
Li Wong's Eco Living Articles
Written by Li Wong of Earth Alkemie

Happy New Year!  Every year I make Eco resolutions and try to implement more Eco-conscious practices in my life.  Living a green lifestyle is not only healthier for you and your family, but it’s also easier on your wallet.  Not sure what green resolutions to make this year?  Here are some great suggestions!

Educate Yourself!

Strive to learn about ecological issues.  Pick issues that you are interested in, educate yourself on them, and learn about how you can make a difference.  Small changes can make huge impacts!

There are a wide range of environmental topics, spanning nearly every subject, field, and aspect of life.  For example, if you are interested in global issues, you might want to learn about climate change and what you can do locally, in your daily life, to help (97% of climate scientists agree that climate change is occurring1).  If you are concerned about local issues, you may want to learn about environmental issues that affect your community or state.  Your local and state government’s websites or local environmental organizations are great resources to start learning about your area’s ecological problems.  If you want to learn more about products you use every day, then I recommend learning about toxins, irritants, and fillers found in many foods, skin care, and house cleaning products, and their green counterparts.   If you like learning about wildlife and nature, many plants and animals are threatened or endangered, including some of the most beloved creatures, such as pandas.

Ecological, plant, and animal magazines and news articles are good resources.  There are many excellent scientific, government, and non-profit organizations that have online educational resources.  Join an environmental non-profit, or participate in programs from your local parks, ecological organizations, and community centers.  Many websites and blogs are devoted to living a green and crunchy lifestyle!

Participate In Environmental Activities And Practices!

You can greatly reduce your ecological footprint simply by reducing what you consume and by implementing environmental practices in your life.  In my research, I’ve found that most people care about the environment, however they think it is time consuming or expensive to be more Eco-conscious.  Or they simply don’t know how to live a green lifestyle.  However, many green alternatives don’t take that much time and they are often budget friendly.  It may take a little time to learn about them, but once you get into the habit of doing green practices or activities, you will be amazed about how little time they take to do!  Many green practices and products are inexpensive to do or buy, either costing less, the same, or just a little more than commercial products.  For others, it may be expensive to invest in certain green products or services initially, but they save you a lot of money in the long run.

Decide on a few environmental activities and practices, and commit to them.  Some great but simple ideas: use natural, organic, sweatshop free, or fair trade products.  Use reusable bags or bottles.  Use or formulate your own natural cosmetics and house cleaning products.  Eat more natural, organic, and local foods.  Reduce clutter, buy only what you need or will use, give new life to old products (use them for different purposes or donate them), and recycle what you can.  Spend time outdoors to reconnect with nature.  Educate others and get involved in your local community.  Or start an online Eco blog or website to inspire others in going green!  Donate funds to your favorite environmental and non-profit social welfare organizations.  There are so many ways to live in a green manner; these are just a few basic ideas!

I wish you all a green and natural New Year!
